Las Vegas, The City Of The Meadows

The city of Las Vegas in Nevada is sometimes known as Sin City, or The Entertainment Capital of the World. It is famed for its casinos, most of them along the Vegas Strip where more light bulbs glow than in any other place in the world.

Las Vegas is not an old city. It was established in 1905, just 102 years ago. In 1911 it became officially designated as a city. It is the largest city in the USA that was founded in the 20th century. It is the gambling capital of America and well known for its glamorous shows, exotic tours and adult entertainment.

Before anyone lived there it was an area used for waterin ghorses and other animals by the Spanish along the Old Spanish trail up from Texas. The name, Las Vegas, means the meadows, and it was known for its green grasslands. The availability of water made the area naturally attractive to settlers.

Today Las Vegas is unrecognizable from its humble beginnings. It is a popular tourist town that can party all night, and usually does. many people descenf on Las Vegas during their vacations in the hope that they might win a fortune. The vast majority do not.
