With Las Vegas tourism numbers at their lowest they have been in a long time, Governor Jim Gibbons of Nevada would like to get California visitors here quicker and easier with a high speed train. For many years this idea has been nothing more than that, an idea. But Gibbons has recently met with Barrack Obama about applying the stimulus package to this idea.
If constructed this new high speed train would take southern California residents to Las Vegas in about 86 minutes and would avoid drivers to have to use interstate 15 to make the trek across the desert. The train travels at around 300 mph and sits on magnetic levitation technology. Currently this type of train has been used in Japan since 2003 and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gibbons have agreed to the project. This would stimulate local tourism for people not really willing to make the car ride but would enjoy taking a train ride to Las Vegas. Since more and more people are trying to stay closer to home for vacations this would be a great way to put some pep back into the Las Vegas economy as well as California’s. Certain steps have already been made to free up room for the project like a $45 million dollar study on the environmental impact for this project. Totals numbers to build the train would be in the ballpark of $12-$13 billion and would create many new jobs along with it. Nothing has been approved but officials are getting together to discuss options on how to allow this dream to come true.

I’m impress with the high speed rail project for california, it would be nice to have the High speed train reaching Phoenix Arizona, because there lots of people that travels from AZ to CA and I live in Scottdale AZ
This could bring more biz and med size trade events in by day from LA etc and would just be better than the 20 mule team ever was through the MV.
This would be an excellent idea! I hope it happens.
This is an excellent idea. I live in MN and probably will never use it but the USA needs to get more mass transit which includes things other than planes. Go for it!
What is wrong with this country, $45 million on an environmental impact study? You either build the train or you dont. This money would be better spent on helping people who are victims of our current economic crisis.
This is a no brainer, the jobs it would create for many now looking for work. Due to the current crisis. Not to mention the funds it would generate for both states. Many nations now have these high speed trains. And we are now playing catchup. Come on america we’re better than this, let’s go old school and take life by the horns again.
This is a no brainer and will get America moving again and will bild something big and lasting.. I will buy the first ticket round trip.
On of the problems is that they’re thinking of having the train start in Victorville, CA which is 80 miles outside of LA. That distance in LA still equates to hours and hours of travel by car, just to get to the train station. If they’re going to do it and want it to be successful, they better chose a place that’s way more accessible.
An excelent idea and General Motors should start building train coaches instead of automobiles.
