Making the Past Come Alive

May 19th, 2008 by Las Vegas USA Blog

The shady past of Sin City is a big Las Vegas attraction. People have seen it played out in dozens of movies, read about it and enjoyed the stories as they have been told through the generations. But you still don´t know the half of it! The city is one that has not only a shady past, but a violent and mob related one, as well.

Las Vegas attractions, the mob

The Mafia was crucial in making Las Vegas what it is today. Their methods may have been a little unorthodox, but they got the job done. Care to speculate on how many bodies have been dumped in the foundations of the older casinos along the Strip? Well, no one knows for sure, but at least one person has ended up in the concrete drink!

Most Las Vegas attractions are pretty tame. The history of Las Vegas, though, is something else. Filled with shootouts and gunfights, murders and traitors, it´s a story that you will find fascinating and one that is absolutely true. These men really did live and they changed the course of history, if not for everyone, then at least for this Nevada city.

The mob is still hinted at in these parts and if you are interested in all things mafia, you´ll definitely want to take a walk through Las Vegas!

Las Vegas Attractions: Enjoy the Flora of the Nevada Desert

May 11th, 2008 by Las Vegas USA Blog

Las Vegas has plenty of man-made attractions, but you might be surprised to find out that there is more to Las Vegas. Attractions like the New York roller coaster and the Coca Cola factory are nothing compared to the wild beauty of the desert.

Many people just assume that the Nevada Desert is windswept sand, maybe with a cactus here or there, but you´d be amazed at how many different species actually live out in the sand dunes! These Las Vegas attractions are really something else. You´ll find that you can see quite a bit from the road, but it´s not likely you´ll get a good look at everything you want to.

The best way to really check out the plants that grow around Las Vegas is to take a dirt bike or ATV out into the desert. You´ll be able to slow down and get a good look at the plants around you. It´s a truly wonderful way to connect with the earth and to create a bond between yourself and Las Vegas that lasts for ever.

Las Vegas attractions are many, but by leaving out the natural Las Vegas attractions, you are really missing out on a lot. It´s a good idea to book ahead as a method of ensuring that you´ll have a space on the tour that you are aiming for.

March 18th, 2008 by Las Vegas USA Blog

Lake Mead is big Las Vegas attraction. Sitting behind the Hoover Dam, you´ll see this blue reservoir lake on most Las Vegas tours to the Grand Canyon or the dam. It is the largest man made lake in the States and was named after Elwood Mead who played an important part in the planning and commissioning of the dam and lake.

You can camp on the shore, enjoy swimming or kayaking on the lake or just sunbathing on the beach. Lake Mead is quite the interest point, with it´s center basin and four “arms”.

Probably the best way to check out the popular Las Vegas attraction is to simply head out in a kayak. Kayaking is a relaxing way to see the local scenery, since you are sitting right down in the water and only the sound of your paddle slipping into the water will distract you from the sights. There´s something very special about gliding smoothly through the water in a nice kayak.

If you have the time, consider checking out one of the most beautiful Las Vegas attractions, Lake Mead. It´s definitely worth taking the time to enjoy.

Las Vegas Attractions: Lake Mead´s Fascinating Basins

March 3rd, 2008 by Las Vegas USA Blog

Las Vegas is surrounded by marvels, both man-made and natural. Lake Mead is a combination of both. One of four lakes created by the construction of the Hoover Dam, this lake is made up of five distinct parts.

Las Vegas, Lake Mead

The center section of Lake Mead is called Virgin Basin and it features many beaches, though limited road access. From this center, four arms reach out, each one with its own name, Temple Basin, Gregg Basin, Overton Arm and Boulder Basin. In general, Boulder Basin is where the majority of tourists head since it is closest to Las Vegas (just a 30 minute drive) and there are plenty of hotels and activities here.

Lake Mead is the ideal place to cool off in the desert. As it is affected by the Hoover Dam and the Colorado River, this lake has levels that rise and fall, depending on the amount of water available at any given time. This can mean that the beaches change drastically and there is often new scenery to look at. With such an interesting lake so close to Las Vegas, it´s no wonder people flock here regularly.

Las Vegas: Ride Through Jesse James´ Stomping Grounds

December 30th, 2007 by Las Vegas USA Blog

With the new Brad Pitt movie about Jesse James coming out, a lot of people are interested in seeing where this notorious criminal hung out. Just outside of Las Vegas, you can ride the same trails that he took, see the desert as he saw it . . . not much has changed in the years since Jesse James rode here.

Las Vegas Jesse James Ride

The Jesse James Horse Ride takes you on horseback through the Nevada desert, past deserted mines that once hummed with life and through the dry riverbed that probably served to quench the horseman´s thirst at some point in history. Now, the desert has claimed it.

You´ll enjoy a true cowboy breakfast before mounting up and riding out early and heading through a patch of fertile land where horses and cattle graze. Back in the day, this would have been a prime target for horse rustlers, but these days, the ranch serves as a hospice for old and abused animals.

The Jesse James Horse Ride is a wonderful way to see the land around Las Vegas and experience life the way it used to be.

December 27th, 2007 by Las Vegas USA Blog

There are some people who just love to get that rush of adrenaline and there are plenty of Las Vegas attractions that are ready to give you just that. Thrill rides abound and can be found all over the city, but especially on the Strip.

Circus Circus has the Adventuredome, a glass dome full of nauseating rides like Chaos and Rim Runner. There are some tamer rides where kids can get their adrenaline rush, too. Other great roller coaster thrills include the tallest, fastest roller coaster in all of Nevada, located in Primm and the New York, New York coaster that swoops around the outside of the hotel.

Las Vegas Attraction Glider

Las Vegas attractions for adrenaline junkies don´t just include roller coasters, though, you can get your kicks high in the sky, too! Try heading up in a glider for some flips and barrel rolls . . . a wild ride, even without the engine. Or you might prefer to jump out of a plane, which can be done, too, of course!

There are Las Vegas attractions that give you your adrenaline fix, just waiting to be tried. So if you find that you get bored just hanging out at the slots, head for the airport or the nearest coaster!

Free Las Vegas Attractions

December 22nd, 2007 by Las Vegas USA Blog

While there are plenty of cheap buffets in Las Vegas and you can walk to most places on the Strip, sometimes it´s nice to get something for free. So, here are a few free Las Vegas attractions to check out.

M&M’s World
For chocolate lovers, this is the perfect place to learn more about your favorite candy. They also have an amazing array of colors available that you can purchase in separated bags. So if you are always sorting out the green M&M’s to eat last, now you can just buy that color!

Las Vegas Attractions, neon

Neon Museum
If you enjoy neon signs, you´ll love this free Las Vegas attraction full of old signs that once graced the likes of the Aladdin Hotel, Red Barn Bar and The Flame Restaurant. There are neon marvels here that date back to the 1940´s and the whole thing is located on Freemont Street.

Lions
That´s right, you don´t have to see Siegfried and Roy just to get a glimpse of some big cats. The MGM Grand has a lion habitat inside where you can watch these large felines playing, sleeping and, if you´re lucky, eating. Definitely one of the better Las Vegas attractions.

Bonnie & Clyde Getaway Car
Want to see something really historical and fascinating? Check out the actual car that this famous duo died in, riddled with bullet holes. Also on display are Clyde´s shirt (worn at the time of his death), family photos and a few items that he made during his time in prison. You can get to Primm, where the museum is located, by bus, taxi, or take a desert ATV tour.

Whether you are interested in wildlife, history or food, there is a Las Vegas attraction, or two or three, for everyone.
